From 2003-2008, Public Health—Seattle & King County and its community partners were the recipients of a Steps to a Healthier US grant program. This grant supported the efforts of community level activities in King County, covering the areas of asthma, diabetes, obesity, nutrition, physical activity and tobacco. As Dr. Alonzo Plough, Director of Public Health—Seattle & King County, said when announcing the grant in 2003, “Locally we have serious health disparities, and with this grant we will be able to focus on the communities with greatest needs in south Seattle and King County.

The Steps to a Healthier US grant program provided many opportunities for collaboration among the different community partners, several of whom had not previously worked together. Many exciting developments have taken place as a result of these partnerships. We wish to thank Public Health—Seattle & King County for all of its hard work and dedication to this project over the years. Special thanks to Dr. Jim Krieger for his guidance as the grant lead and to our contract manager Lorrie Alfonsi for all her help and support over the years.

Action for Media Education was one of the STEPS partners and its project, Food for Thought, involved the development and pilot testing of a multi-media program for presentation by parents to parent audiences. This website is an extension of that project.
The Food for Thought resource book
that is available for download was also developed as a part of this project for use by the STEPS partners. The Food for Thought presentation that was developed originally for use by the STEPs partners is now available for distribution to anyone having interest in this program. (Please go to Schedule a Presentation.)
